What is Truth? - Part 3 "You can't make this stuff up"

What is your source of truth?

I am going to venture a little deeper into answering this question again this week. Our source for truth must be credible, therefore, I want to scrutinize God by way of what He has accomplished creating this place we call our home. Can God hold up under this kind of investigation? Any legitimate search for the truth must be based on facts, and the stubborn thing about facts is they can’t be changed to suit our opinions. Facts can be challenged, but challenging them without another credible source is futile.

The source I choose to use is the Bible. Here in the very first chapter God has clearly given us the blueprint, not only of what He did, but HOW He accomplished creation. This account is so bizarre no one could make this stuff up. Do you think a human being could make up all the things that are detailed about our beginning? Take me for instance…I’m a good storyteller when it comes to my grandchildren. When they were young and gullible, they sometimes would come and spend the night here in our home. I would spin them a yarn about a fictitious person named lunatic Larry. I made this story believable even though lunatic Larry did not exist. It didn’t take long even at their young age to shoot holes in my story. But are the so-called experts able to shoot holes in the creation story? They might not believe it, and they may even discount it, but that is not the same as disproving what has been written in the pages of Genesis.

We as human beings think we need an explanation for the unexplainable. However, there are many things that we encounter and each day that on a human level are hard to explain. Can we explain the air we breathe apart from our God who created the plants that are so critical to the air we breathe? Yet, we breathe approximately 60 times a minute. How about the difference between our fresh water sources and salt water sources? Can that be explained apart for our God who spoke them into being? And here again, we immediately know the difference between the two and know which one we can consume.

God created our universe with a precise design, and it works to perfection. He is the divine architect behind it all. God himself is such a complex being, the only way a human being can understand Him is through His own revelation of Himself. John’s Gospel records that God became flesh and dwelt among us. He goes on to say, we saw His Glory, Glory as the only begotten from the father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). He goes on to say, no one has seen God at any time, the only begotten of God who is in the bosom of the father, he has explained him (John 1:18).

John is telling us plainly that until Jesus came, the only way to know about God was what He revealed about Himself through his creation and His interaction with His creation. Psalm 19:1-2 tells us, the heavens declare the glory of God and their expanse is declaring the work of his hands; day to day pours forth speech and night to night reveals knowledge. Are you concerned with how smart God is or how He can work all things together? Go outside tonight, and take a glance toward the heavens. He holds all that together by the Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3).

That is quite a statement! Can we believe that everything He says is true? After all, this statement is written in the Bible for all to see. That particular statement was written over 2000 years ago. As far as I know, even though some so-called experts have challenged it to be true, there has been no other credible alternative offered to explain how our planet and universe just keeps on working like it always has. Let’s look at just a few facts about our earth that the experts cannot deny or explain how they came into being. Let’s begin with the tilt of the earth. Something I don’t get up every morning and say is, “Wow, the earth is tilted. Isn’t that just peachy!” No, I doubt that any of us do this. We don’t even think about it. However, someone is thinking about it and maintaining it every single day. He is the one who spoke it into being and tilted it just right. It is tilted precisely at 23.5° in its relevance to the sun and moon. Without that precise tilt, there would be no seasons, and there would be no life because the tilt of the earth at that degree is critical to life on earth.

No one can make this one fact up about our planet. Why do I say that? Just take a moment and think about it. This one element of our planet, this “tilt,” is so critical for life. How many of us common people ever think about the tilt of the earth? And yet it remains constant, as do all the other things that God spoke into existence. Really, in my view, no reasonable person can take a long hard look at our universe and conclude that it just happened. Friends, God told us He spoke it into being and upholds it by the WORD of HIS POWER. Do you have a better explanation?

Read Genesis 1:1-13. Do you see the details of the order of events? This order speaks volumes, and I don’t believe for one moment that Moses could have made this up. But not only does the story of creation testify to Devine Design, the whole Bible defies human explanation with repeated events and people who are directly affected by the Word and Power of God. If we don’t acknowledge God as creator and sustainer of this tremendous place we call home, then we are either stubborn, naive, or blind to the facts. Moses was a smart man and without a doubt one of the biggest heroes of the Jewish nation. Yet even with all his smarts, God had to reveal to him the truth about creation. Moses could not even make these things up.

Bear with me for just a few more thoughts.

The book of Hebrews is a New Testament letter that was written to a group of Hebrews (Jews). At the outset of this letter the writer tells us, that in times past God has been addressing our ancestors through spokespeople he called prophets (Hebrews 1:1). Through them, he declared his truth and his eternal plans. But even that was not good enough for God. He has spoken to us one more fantastic way. If we missed His Voice of truth in creation, and we were not willing to listen to His human spokespeople throughout the past centuries, He gives us one more opportunity to hear His voice, to tell us he loves us. In Hebrews 1:1-3 He speaks again. And what a word he speaks! In these last days He has spoken to us IN His Son. He is saying, “I want a relationship with you so bad I am willing to send My Son to explain Me. I love you enough to kill My Son so He can remove your sin, the only thing that separates you from Me. “I can say no more. I can do no more. Either you hear my voice and believe Me, or you don’t. If you, my created loved ones refuse to believe that whatever I say is true, I can do nothing more to convince you.”

The creation was not enough. The prophets, as earnest and diligent as they were to speak God’s truth we’re not enough. So, God sent His Son, and John gives us the results: There it was—the true Light [was then] coming into the world [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] that illumines every person. He came into the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him [did not know Him]. He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own—His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him. But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name— (John 1:9-12 AMP).

No, I can’t make this stuff up. As Isaiah the prophet wrote, He was despised and rejected and forsaken by man, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief and sickness. And like one who men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate his worth, or have any esteem for him (Isaiah 53:3).

Sad to say, but the scripture says a fool says in his heart there is no God! Even after revealing himself through creation, the prophets, and ultimately His Son Jesus who died on the cross… after all this, some without a doubt would dare to say “no God,” and there are multitudes who believe this. Friends I can’t make this stuff up!
